Smoke/CO Detector Safety

🚨 SAFETY BRIEFING: SMOKE & CARBON MONOXIDE ALARMS

Early warning from smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms saves lives. Proper installation and maintenance ensure your household is protected from fire and invisible hazards.

🔔 WHY ALARMS MATTERSmoke alarms provide critical early warning in a fire.
Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can be deadly without warning.
Working alarms significantly increase your chance of survival.

🏠 WHERE TO INSTALL ALARMSSmoke Alarms:
On every level of your home
Inside and outside sleeping areas
At the top of stairways
Carbon Monoxide Alarms:
Outside sleeping areas
On every level of the home
Near (but not directly next to) fuel-burning appliances

🔋 TESTING & MAINTENANCETest all alarms once a month
Replace batteries at least once a year (or as needed)
Clean alarms regularly to remove dust
Replace entire units every 10 years (or per manufacturer guidance)

⚠️ WHEN AN ALARM SOUNDS
Smoke Alarm:
Get out immediately
Stay low to avoid smoke
Call 911 once outside
Never re-enter a burning building

Carbon Monoxide Alarm:
Move outside to fresh air immediately
Call 911
Do not re-enter until emergency services say it is safe

🚫 COMMON MISTAKES TO AVOIDDo not remove batteries to silence alarms
Do not ignore nuisance alarms—identify the cause
Do not install alarms too close to kitchens or bathrooms (to prevent false alarms)
Never disable a carbon monoxide alarm

👨‍👩‍👧 FAMILY SAFETY TIPSMake sure everyone knows the sound of each alarm
